The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is delivered in 2 Tiers
Aiming to save lives by ensuring the health and social care workforce have the right skills and knowledge to provide safe, compassionate and informed care to autistic people and people with a learning disability. NHS England 2024.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training. The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a statutory requirement that regulated service providers must ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the standardised training that was developed for this purpose and is the government's preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff.
Oliver’s Training is delivered in 2 Tiers. Staff need to complete either Tier 1 or Tier 2.
Both Tiers consist of 2 parts.
The first part of both Tier 1 and Tier 2 is the e-learning. Everyone will need to complete the e-learning regardless of where they work and the Tier of training they require. The second part of the training is either a live 1 hour online interactive session for those needing Tier 1, or, or, a 1-day face to face training for people who require Tier 2.
Tier 1 of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is for people who require general awareness of the support autistic people or people with a learning disability may need.
Tier 2 of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is for people who may need to provide care and support for autistic people or people with a learning disability.
Both Tier 1 and Tier 2 training sessions are delivered by Trio’s: Facilitator and Autistic Expert with lived experience and Learning Disability Expert with lived experience.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is the government’s preferred and recommended training for the health and social care sector.
Oliver's Training is currently being rolled out by Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care System and is available to all professionals working in the NHS and Social Care sector within Norfolk and Waveney. ACC Consulting Limited is the training provider delivering Oliver's Training.

Tier 1 of Oliver’s training is divided into two parts. The first part is the 90-minute e-Learning for Health module with handbook. This e-learning must be completed prior to attending the 1-day face to face event.
By continuing to book this training you are confirming that you have completed the 90-minute Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism e-Learning with handbook PRIOR to attending the 60-minute webinar event.
This 60-minute webinar training is designed for health and social care staff who require a general awareness of the support that autistic people and people with a learning disability may need.
This session is co-delivered by an approved trainer with a learning disability, an approved autistic trainer, and an approved facilitating trainer.
IMPORTANT:
Participants are required to attend for the full 60 minutes.
Some of the training content includes sensitive and potentially challenging information about Oliver’s tragic story. If you feel affected by Oliver’s story and the content of the training, it is important that you speak to your employer and to access appropriate support.
Participants are required to join the online interactive session individually using a laptop, tablet, or a computer.
Please ensure that you know how to mute/unmute yourself and turn your camera on and off. More information about how to manage the controls in Teams can be found here.
Participants will receive a certificate of completion within two weeks of attending and your organisation will be advised that you have completed the training. You will be responsible for sharing your certificate with your employer if required.
